BoSacks Speaks Out: The Blog Of War

BoSacks Speaks Out: The Blog Of War

BoSacks Speaks Out: BLOGS are a new and developing form of journalism. They are still in their formative years, under development and growing rapidly. BLOGS have in a very short space of time, toppled politicians and media personalities. The same can also be said for traditional media. But traditional media is somewhat slower to report and not quite so anonymous. There are some interesting aspects of BLOGGERS' that contain potentially unchecked and abusive use of Internet power. It is a necessary line of logic to ponder.

We are in uncharted waters. Democracy needs total freedom of the press to thrive. That freedom links an informed public and the political process. As I try to hold that thought, I am troubled by the terrible power of an under-read public and its susceptibility to unsubstantiated "facts." It is a paradox that will unfold right before our eyes in the next few years. At the very least, I think it is fair to say that we are more vulnerable to media manipulation than ever before. Yes, there were the years of yellow journalism and media contrivances before, but I think we are on the edge of something new and far more powerful.

What are your thoughts?

This is the worst blog I have ever seen in my two days experience looking at blogs!

Are blogs journalism or journals? They may be the today’s largest contributor to the public’s susceptibility to unsubstantiated facts and bias. Yellow journalism may have risen to sell papers, but aren’t most bloggers trying to sell something—whether it be ideals and causes, products, or dare I say, advertising?

Greetings from AAAA. This was hard to read on a blackberry, but probably isn't your target.

My eyes get bloggy just trying to read it. Actually this afternoon's contrast is much better than this morning's was.

I love the touch of green, it reminds me of cutting pulp trees in the good ole days . . .

Bob, trying to figure this out, last message lost, I think. My comment was that Blogs are the journalism of the future, and if you have stock in traditional media, you might think about selling it...

Always on the cutting edge...Bo obviously knows Blogs.

Blogs are dangerous. They are anonymous and must be taken with many gains of salt. IT might be an interesting source of thought but not information.

Farrace said...

If there is danger, it is in the willingness of readers to accept blog commentary at face value, unsubstantiated, undocumented. I hope over time that we get better at assessing the worth of claims made in blogs. But if you consider how the last two elections unfolded, with the power of the media corrupted by careerism, with a public more interested in being entertained than informed, with the citizenry increasingly driven by self interest at the expense of the common good, it doesn't look promising. The blog phenomenon may simply reveal democracy's -- and digital technology's -- biggest flaw: That when people are allowed to customize what they read, watch only those media channels which are on their same philosophical plane, the road will continually narrow until the citizenry becomes beyond polarized, entrenched in views that are unchangeable and etched in stone, reinforced by a constant fix of news how we like it, not how we need it.

Far too many people believe things just because they've read them. The ability to maintain independent thought is waning in the general public. For that matter, thinking has become a lost asset in the workforce.

Too many people are satisfied with showing up and putting in their time - and too many managers are OK with it.

I think the concept of a completely unbiased news media has always been just that, a concept. I'll never forget a journalism class I took in the late '70s wherein the instructor (a long-time editor in the world of newsmagazines) made it clear the first day that we all have to, and should, bring our points of view to the stories. He also made it clear that we all had to stick to the facts we had so as not to be completely biased, rahter we could make decisions as to which were the more salient facts.

Unfortunately, the MSM has gotten into the habit, it seems, of not applying proper analysis to what they report. If person A says the sky is blue and person B says the sky is green, it's not enough to report that this is what they said without going on to say that person A's comments are backed by the facts.

This is a somewhat long-winded lead-in to my belief that with Blogs, you can usually get a pretty quick read on the slant that the blogger, and their commentors (is that a real word?), bring to their postings. I certainly lean left and tend to read more blogs that I agree with politically. I also make it a point to regularly visit some from the other end of the spectrum to see what their takes on the news are.

I look at Blogs more as Op-Ed columns than news articles. Columnists from anywhere on the political spectrum can do both good and bad with their writings. Likewise with Blogs. In both cases, at least we have a good sense of from where their perspective comes.

Farrace said...

Although I disagree with njbrad's assessment that unbiased news does not exist, I agree with what he says about reading the slant of the blogger. If you are the least bit savvy, you can compute an objectivity quotient. This is the saving grace. Like any form of media -- reportage, commentary, advertising -- you arrive at a level of trust or distrust with a blog. I hope as as information consumers we find a way to reward bloggers who, while perhaps lacking the incentive for complete objectivity, are at least consistent and honest. This is what I look for, and appreciate.

Blogs can be a really good thing. It's giving the people a voice as long as you read between the lines and don't forget about facts, your own values and points of view.
Politician are so wrapped up in Power and Politics I don't think they really see what is going on in the World. And nowadays people don't trust the news. Every station has a slant, be it left or right , if you watch the news for 3 minutes you can tell what side of the political track they are on and why the other side is rotten. In doing this the major stations are seperating America and alienating viewers. Journalist need to state the facts and the facts only. They need to cover all sides of the facts and the major stations need to air it that way UNBIASED.
That's what I like about Blogs if you do your own research on the facts then get everybody's opinion from the blogs and you can come up with the truth.
